On January 6 Tunisian President Habib Bourguiba reversed his government's decision to raise the price of bread and other cereal products. The price increases had caused widespread rioting in the country since December 29.The 80-year-old President's announcement was greeted by demonstrations of joy in the streets of Tunis. Some members of the crowd embraced soldiers and police, who has been deployed earlier in the week following the Government's declaration of a state of emergency. The Government had decide to increase bread prices by 110 per cent in order to cut subsidies on bread and other foodstuffs the prices of which had remained largely unchanged for many years.Unofficial reports say at least 57 people died in the riots. After announcing his decision to cancel the food price rises, President Bourguiba said he had ordered a new budget in which price increase would fall on relatively luxuries such as petrol, wine and other alcohols.
