  • Description

FLAGS THROUGHOUT KENYA WERE FLOWN AT HALF-MAST ON MONDAY (7 JULY) TO HERALD A WEEK OF NATIONAL MOURNING, ORDERED BY PRESIDENT KENYATTA FOR MR. TOM MBOYA, KENYA'S MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT, FATALLY SHOT BY AN UNKNOWN ASSASSIN ON SATURDAY (5 JULY), AS PEOPLE QUEUED OUTSIDE THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING IN NAIROBI TO OFFER THEIR RESPECTS TO MR. MBOYA'S WIDOW BY SIGNING THE BOOK OF CONDOLENCE THERE. POLICE, WHO ARE CONTINUING TO SEEK MR. MBOYA'S KILLER, ARE TIGHTENING SECURITY PRECAUTIONS TO PREVENT FURTHER TROUBLE BETWEEN THE LUO -- MR. MBOYA'S TRIBE -- AND THE KIKUYU, WHILE YESTERDAY (7 JULY) PRESIDENT KENYATTA CALLED AN EMERGENCY CABINET MEETING AT HIS PRIVATE RESIDENCE AT GATATANDU -- 30 MILE FROM NAIROBI -- TO DISCUSS THE COUNTRY'S SECURITY.

FLAG THROUGHOUT KENYA HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO BE FLOWN AT HALF-MAST BY PRESIDENT KENYATTA IN A WEEK OF NATIONAL MOURNING.

AS POLICE CONTINUED TO SEEK THE KILLER OF MR. MBOYA, SHOT DEAD OUTSIDE A NAIROBI SHOP ON SATURDAY (5 JULY) AFTERNOON, PEOPLE QUEUED UP OUTSIDE THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING IN NAIROBI TO SIGN MR. MBOYA'S BOOK OF CONDOLENCE.

THOUSANDS OF GRIEF-STRICKEN LUO, MEMBERS OF THE LATE MINISTER'S TRIBE, CONTINUED TO GATHER AROUND MR. MBOYA'S COFFIN AT HIS HOUSE. THEY REFUSED MEMBERS OF OTHER TRIBES -- INCLUDING SOME GOVERNMENT MINISTERS -- ENTRY TO THE HOUSE.

ALL OVER KENYA THERE IS TENSION BETWEEN THE LUO -- WHO ARE A NILOTIC TRIBE -- AND THE KIKUYU -- WHO ARE BANTU -- AND MANY INCIDENTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED. IN THE STREETS OF NAIROBI, POLICE HAVE TIGHTENED SECURITY MEASURES TO PREVENT FURTHER DISTURBANCES.

THOUSANDS OF MOURNING LUO GATHERED IN NAIROBI ON MONDAY TO CONSIDER FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS AND LAUNCH A MEMORIAL FUND FOR MR. MBOYA. STEEL-HELMETED RIOT POLICE TRIED TO BREAK UP THE MEETING, BUT AFTER A CHALLENGE BY THE CROWD THEY GAVE UP.

THE SAME DAY, MR. KENYATTA CALLED AN EMERGENCY CABINET MEETING AT HIS PRIVATE RESIDENCE AT GATATUNDU, ABOUT 30 MILES FROM NAIROBI, TO DISCUSS THE COUNTRY'S SECURITY. MINISTERS GATHERED UNDER A MANGO TREE TO TALK ABOUT THE DETERIORATING SECURITY AND CONSIDER HOW TO GIVE MR. MBOYA A STATE FUNERAL WITHOUT CAUSING MORE SERIOUS RIOTS.

EARLY ON WEDNESDAY (9 JULY) MORNING, MR. MBOYA'S BODY WILL BEGIN THE LONG, SLOW DRIVE BACK TO HIS PEOPLE IN NYANZA, READY FOR HIS BURIAL ON RUSINGA ISLAND, IN LAKE VICTORIA, ON FRIDAY (11 JULY). THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ARE EXPECTED TO CONVERGE ON THE LITTLE ISLAND -- AND EVERY AVAILABLE POLICEMAN HAS BEEN ORDERED TO BE THERE TO QUELL ANY TRIBAL BATTLES.
