  • Description

Cuban Premier Fidel Castro was the main orator at an elaborate mass funeral for 50 victims of the explosion that wrecked the French munitions-laden ship 'Le Coubre' in Havana Harbour March 4.

Fire engines and trucks, laden with coffins and a profusion of wreaths, travelled in sedate procession from Cathedral top cemetery along a roadway carpeted with flowers. Bereaved relatives cried hysterically and were supported by sympathisers among the many thousands lining the route.

During his speech, Premier Castro accused the United States of sabotaging the ship --- carrying a cargo of Belgian arms --- by placing a detonator among the cargo before it left Europe.

Cuba's Charge d'Affaires in Washington was called to U.S. Secretary of State Herter's office March 7 and given the text of America's denial of Castro's charges, reported to have been in most severe political language.
