  • Description

TO THE BUDDHIST TEMPLE IN AKURALA, PRONOUNCED A-KU-RAA-LA, 60 MILES FROM COLOMBO IN CEYLON, JAPANESE AMBASSADOR TO CEYLON MR. AKIRA MATSUI PAID A VISIT.

UNLIKE DIPLOMATIC VISITS THAT RELATE TO MUNDANE THINGS, THIS VISIT WAS TO STRENGTHEN THE SPIRITUAL BROTHERHOOD THAT EXISTS BETWEEN THE BUDDHIST COUNTRIES OF CEYLON AND JAPAN.

THE AMBASSADOR WAS WELCOMED BY TRADITIONAL TEMPLE DANCES AND DRUMS.

THE OCCASION WAS THE PRESENTATION TO JAPAN THROUGH THE AMBASSADOR A NINE FOOT HIGH BRASS KOTHA PRONOUNCED KOR-THA FOR THE PEACE TEMPLE IN HIMEJI, IN JAPAN.

KOTHA IS THE SPIRE USUALLY MADE OF BRONZE OR BRASS AND SOMETIMES GOLD PLATED, TO CROWN THE DOMES OF BUDDHIST TEMPLES. SMALLER KOTHAS CROWN HINDU TEMPLES, BUT IN GREATER NUMBERS.

THE PEACE TEMPLE IN JAPAN IS TO COMMEMORATE BOTH THE 2500TH ANNIVERSARY OF BUDDHA'S BIRTH AND ENLIGHTENMENT AND THE DEATH OF THOUSANDS OF JAPANESE DURING THE LAST WAR.

THE KOTHA STUDDED WITH GEMS IS VALUED AT 12,000 US DOLLARS AND ITS DONATION TO JAPAN WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE INCUMBENT PRIEST OF AKURALA TEMPLE, REV. WIMALADASSA WHO DEVOTED THREE YEARS TO COLLECT FUNDS AND FINISH THE KOTHA.

THE KOTHA WILL BE SHIPPED TO JAPAN LATER, TO CROWN THE PEACE TEMPLE.
