  • Description

WHILE THE GREAT FASHION HOUSES OF PARIS ARE TAKING CAREFUL STEPS TO ENSURE THEIR DESIGNS FOR SPRING AND SUMMER ARE NOT SEEN BEFORE THE OFFICIAL SHOWS, AT THE END OF THE MONTH, ONE MAN, PACO RABANNE, WELCOMED OUR CAMERAMAN. FOR PACO RABANNE USES SUCH UNUSUAL MATERIALS THAT HE HAS LITTLE FEAR OF BEING COPIED.

ALUMINIUM IS ONE OF M. RABANNE'S FAVOURITE MATERIALS. HIS SEAMSTRESSES HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO HANDLE ALUMINIUM AS WELL AS VARIETY OF OTHER MATERIALS NOT USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH HAUTE COUTURE.

    M. RABANNE IS AN ARCHITECT TURNED DESIGNER. HE SAYS THAT FASHIONS IN THE LAST FEW YEARS HAVE BEEN A LONG WAY BEHIND THE TIMES AND HE CRITICISES THE LEADING DESIGNERS FOR THEIR LACK OF EXPERIMENT BOTH IN STYLES AND MATERIALS.

TWO MODELS SHOWN TO OUR CAMERAMEN WERE CALLED CENTURION -- AND THEY LOOK VERY SIMILAR TO THE ARMOUR OF THE ROMAN CENTURION AT THE TIME OF CAESAR. THESE DRESSES WERE MADE OF ALUMINIUM AND WOULD GIVE LITTLE PROTECTION AGAINST ARROWS -- BUT THEN THEY WEREN'T DESIGNED TO REPEL.

ANOTHER DRESS WAS MADE OF ASH-COLOURED PLASTIC. IT WAS SET OFF BY A HAT DECORATED WITH LONG STIPES OF ALUMINIUM, PROVIDING AN INTERESTING VEIL AND TINKLING MUSIC.

RABANNE ALSO SHOWED OUR CAMERAMAN AN EVENING DRESS MADE OF PAPER AND NYLON FIBRE. THIS MULTI-COLOURED FLORAL DRESS WOULD APPEAR TO HAVE RATHER MOR PRACTICABLE VALUE THAN A HAT DECORATED WITH ALUMINIUM STRIPS.
