  • Description

THE OIL TANKER, JOANNA V, HAS RETURNED TO PIRAEUS, ATHENS, BEING UNABLE TO DELIVER ITS CARGO OF OIL TO RHODESIA. IT'S CAPTAIN AND PART-OWNER, GEORGE VARDINOYANNIS, SAID IT NEEDED REPAIRS AND DRY-DOCKING. THE NEXT DESTINATION WAS UNKNOWN.

IN APRIL, THE JOANNA ATTEMPTED TO BREAK THE BLOCKADE SET UP BY THE BRITISH NAVY TO PREVENT OIL SUPPLIES GETTING TO RHODESIA. SHE WAS MOORED FOR SEVERAL DAYS OFF BEIRA, FROM WHERE IT WAS PLANNED THE CARGO OF OIL SHOULD BE PIPED TO RHODESIA.

THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WAS GIVEN THE AUTHORITY FROM THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL TO ARREST THE TANKER IF THE OIL WAS UNLOADED.

GREEK REGISTRATION WAS WITHDRAWN FROM THE TANKER AND, AFTER PANAMANIAN REGISTRATION WAS OBTAINED, THAT ALSO WAS WITHDRAWN.

JOANNA V DOCKED AT BEIRA HARBOUR BUT DID NOT UNLOAD HER CARGO. SHE REMAINED IN THE HARBOUR SEVERAL WEEKS BEFORE SAILING VIA SOUTH AFRICA BACK TO GREECE.
