India and Pakistan have reopened talks in an effort to further improve their relations. Mr Agha Shahi, foreign policy adviser to Pakistan's military strongman General Zia-ul-Haq, arrived in the India capital of new Delhi on Monday (10 April) on a four-day visit.
SYNOPSIS: A call on the Foreign Ministry was made by Mr Shahi on Tuesday, the first full day of his visit.' He was accompanied by senior Pakistani officials.
Mr Shahi was returning a visit paid to Pakistan in February by India's Minister for External Affairs Atal Behari Vajpayee.
Mr Vajpayee said India and Pakistan had started a process of resolving their problems through negotiations, and Mr Shahi's visit was "another link in that chain".
At Parliament House in New Delhi, Mr Shahi and his delegation were received by India Prime Minister Morarji Desai. During the meeting, mr Shahi conveyed a goodwill message from General Zia to Mr Desai. The Pakistani envoy was later due to meet India's President Sanjiva Reddy. Before leaving for home, Mr Shahi will have two further rounds of talks with Mr Vajpayee to discuss bilateral matters. He will also hold a news conference in New Delhi.
