  • Description

ALL BEING WELL, TOURISTS WILL SOON BE TAKING TRIPS UNDER THE WATERS OF LAKE GENEVA. THEY WILL TRAVEL IN THE MESOCAPHE "AUGUSTE PICCARD" -- NAMED AFTER THE FAMOUS UNDERWATER EXPLORER -- WHICH IS NOW UNDERGOING DIVING TRIALS OFF LAUSANNE.

THIS TOURIST SUBMARINE WAS BUILT FOR THE SWISS NATIONAL EXHIBITION, WHICH OPENS IN LAUSANNE ON APRIL 28. IT WILL CARRY 40 PASSENGERS ON A 45-MINUTE TRIP UNDER THE LAKE AT 40 SWISS FRANCS A TIME.

THE WHITE-PAINTED CRAFT IS ELECTRICALLY DRIVEN AND WHEN SUBMERGED HAS A CRUISING SPEED OF FIVE KNOTS. IT IS EQUIPPED WITH TWO-AND-A-HALF TONS OF IRON BALLAST -- HELD BY ELECTRO-MAGNETS -- WHICH CAN BE RELEASED FOR ANY EMERGENCY ASCENT.

MOST OF ITS CRUISING WILL BE DONE IN THE CRYSTAL-CLEAR WATERS AT 120 FEET (36 METRES). AND AMONG THE THINGS TOURISTS WILL WATCH FOR THROUGH THE PORT-HOLES INCLUDE WRECKS OF OLD STEAMERS, AIRCRAFT SHOT DOWN DURING WORLD WAR II, EXCITING ROCK FORMATIONS AND SCHOOLS OF STRANGE FISH.
