  • Description

Although the military situation is worsening around the Laotian town of Pakse -- the last remaining government stronghold at the foot of the Boloven Highlands -- life continues more or less normally.

Military convoys heading northwards to head off the Communist offensive about 15 miles away, and a former school converted into a refugee camp, are the only real evidence that Pakse is virtually besieged.

SYNOPSIS: Army convoys head north from Pakse, the last government stronghold on the Bolovens Plateau in Laos. Their aim: to stave off a growing communist military threat some 15 miles to the north.

But in Pakse itself, there's little to indicate that the town is virtually besieged. For apart from the convoys, the only real evidence of war is the refugee camp -- a former school on the fringe of the town. Here, villagers who fled the fighting cook emergency rations handed out by the government. Some earn extra money weaving cotton fabrics.

Inside the town, there is no sign of a crisis. The local High School still plays its regular weekend football fixtures.

And in the market, food is plentiful. Prices show no signs of rising. Local delicacies are still available -- including snakes. But the Communist guns are now very close to Pakse, and any flights here must now be made after nightfall.
