Background: THE PRESIDENT OF IVORY COAST, M. FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY, TODAY (MONDAY) DISCUSSED AND WORLD ISSUES IN TALKS WITH FRANCE'S PRESIDENT GEORGES POMPIDOU DURING A MEETING BETWEEN THE TWO LEADERS AT THE ELYSEE PALACE, IN PARIS. AFTER THE TALKS, THE AFRICAN LEADER ANSWERED QUESTIONS AT A SPECIAL NEWS CONFERENCE.

PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY CALLED ON PRESIDENT POMPIDOU AT THE END OF HIS PRIVATE TWO-MONTH STAY IN EUROPE AND DURING THE COURTESY CALL, DISCUSSED MATTERS OF MUTUAL INTEREST WITH THE FRENCH LEADER.

IN ANSWER TO QUESTIONS ON THE NIGERIAN WAR, PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY SAID THAT BOTH HE AND PRESIDENT POMPIDOU WISHED FOR A CEASEFIRE THAT WOULD ALLOW THE CHIEF ADVERSARIES TO START A DIALOGUE TOWARDS SETTLEMENT.

REFERRING TO PROPOSALS BY NIGERIAN LEADER GENERAL GOWON FOR A CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES, HE SAID THAT BIAFRA HAD ALWAYS CONSIDERED THERE COULD NEVER BE ANY MILITARY SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. IVORY COAST HAD ALWAYS ENCOURAGED BIAFRA IN ITS SEARCH FOR NEGOTIATIONS.

PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY SAID HIS COUNTRY WOULD BE THE FIRST TO APPLAUD A CEASEFIRE WHICH WOULD BE THE START OF NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES.
