"In the State that is known elsewhere for corn, girl's basket ball, and tornadoes, you might not expect to find dog sled racing but its here for the third year in a row at the Esterville Winter Carnival. Dog sled enthusiasts from several states brought their dogs, hand-made sleds and families to race through the cold snowy afternoon on the hard frozen Des Moines River."



"The dogs are mostly Alaskan Huskies interbred with wolves producing an incredibly strong hardy breed that can tolerate hours of hard work at 30 degrees below zero and it can be expensive, according to one breeder."



Reporter: "How long does it take to train a sled-dog?"



Breeder: "It takes, of actual time, five, six, seven months."



"To really be a top dog, you know, no problem, a dog just goes out and does its job and runs and doesn't look all over and day-dream and what have you."



Reporter: "And how do the guys who do all the work feel about dog sled racing. The resident expert just didn't want to stick his neck out."
