    ITALY CELEBRATED THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE REPUBLIC WITH A MILITARY PARADE IN ROME TODAY (THURSDAY). THE DAY WAS DECLARED A PUBLIC HOLIDAY.

    A CROWD OF 100,00 WATCHED THE PARADE AT WHICH PRESIDENT GUISEPPE SARAGAT TOOK THE SALUTE. MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT, AND MILITARY AITCHES OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS FLANKED THE SALUTING DAIS.

    9,000 SOLDIERS TOOK PART IN THE PARADE. THEY WERE LED, TRADITIONALLY, BY THE CADETS OF ITALY'S MILITARY ACADEMIES. UNITS OF THE ARMY AND NAVY FOLLOWED, WHILE OVERHEAD MORE THAN 200 PLANS TOOK PART IN A FLYPAST.

    TANKS AND ARMOURED CARS RUMBLED DOWN THE VIA DEI FORI IMPERIALI WHICH LEADER TO THE COLLOSEUM. MISSILES ON DISPLAY INCLUDED HAWKS, HONEST JOHNS, AND NIKE HERCULESSES.

    (ON THE 2ND JUNE 1946 ITALY VOTED IN REFERENDUM FOR A REPUBLIC. VOTING WAS COMPULSORY, OPEN TO BOTH MEN AND WOMEN OF 21 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER, 54.3 PER CENT OF THE VALID VOTES CAST WERE IN FAVOUR IN A REPUBLIC IN PREFERENCE TO THE ATTENTION OF THE MONARCHY.)
