  • Description

As people crowded around notice-boards in Tananarive, Sept 7, it was clear that - with three-quarters of the Malagasey election results known - President Tsiranana, leader of the pro-French and pro-western Social Democratic Party, had won a sweeping victory.

    M. Tsiranana had by then received 70% of the votes, and it seemed likely that he would win between 70 and 80 of the 107 seats in the Chamber. His chief opposition came from the independent "Third Force", a coalition headed by three rival nationalist leaders. By Sept 7, the Communist A.K.F.M had only won nine seats with 13.5% of the votes.

The new Government will not be formed until after the elections for the Senate, due Oct 4. M. Tsiranana said that the "Third Force" leader, M. Rabemananjara, would be able to have a place in the Government if he wished. M. Rabemananjara was exiled after an abortive rebellion in 1947 against French rule, and only returned to the island this summer with M. Tsiranana's consent.
