Background: Nigeria's new military government, led by Major-General Mohammed Buhari, received its first visiting chief of state, Sudan's President Jaafar Nimeiri, on January 19. General Nimeiri was welcomed at Lagos's Murtala Mohammed Airport with full official ceremonies, an army guard of honour, and by members of the foreign diplomatic corps. The general, who arrived from Casablanca after attending the Islamic Summit conference, was expected to hold two session of talks with Nigeria's new leader, General Buhari, during the 24-hour visit to Lagos. Both countries -- Nigeria and Sudan -- face enormous economic and social difficulties, and the two military heads of state will have to overcome serious, internal challenges if national unity and stability are to be maintained.
