Background: Sudanese President Jaafar El Nimeiry arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday (26 November) to start a five-day state visit to India.
Indian officials attached considerable importance to the visit -- the Sudanese leader's first to India.
Sudan is among India's largest trading partners in the developing world, but bilateral trade has been stagnating for some time.
President Nimeiry was met at New Delhi Airport by India's Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, and a full ceremonial welcome including a gun salute and military guard of honour.
The Sudanese President was accompanied by his wife and a high-level delegation.
Talks between President Nimeiry and Mrs. Gandhi during the day covered bilateral trade, the international economic situation, in particular the oil crisis.
