Rear-Admiral Americo Tomas--the government-backed candidate has been declared the official winner of Portugal's Presidential election by a large percentaged of votes. His opponent--General Humberto Delgado--the opposition candidate-plans to challenge the election in the courts. Delgado said: QI was robbed."
Lisbon-the capital of Portugal--was tense yesterday as huge crowds turned out for the presidential election. Fifty-two year General Delgado--civil aviation director--was the first opposition candidate in thirty years--to remain in the running by election day. Previous candidates who opposed Premier Salazar's rule had always dropped out. the long lines of voters at the polling places guarded by extra police--were considered on indication of the average men's opposition to Salazar who has been Premier since 1932. The voters placed their marked ballots in the traditional iron bowl. Delgado made one of his strongest showings in the University section--considered Salazar's home district. When Delgado showed up at this polling place-the voters mobbed him. Not many thought he could win-but the fact that he was running against the entrenched rule or Salazar Was enough. Outside--the General was jostled by the news photographers-but he kept smiling. Then the mob raised him to its shoulders-as if in triumph. One Delgado supporter was arrested yesterday. There was no violence. Outside Premier Salazars home-no demonstrations. The Premier-who holds all the power in Portugal--the President being merely a figurehead-finally agreed to pose for these rare pictures. Government officials today said Salazar's was shocked by the size of the protest vote rolled up by Delgado.
