  • Description

FORTY-SEVEN BRITISH BAN-THE-BOMB MARCHERS, WHO WERE BARRED FROM ENTERING WEST GERMANY, WERE STILL AT DUSSELDORF AIRPORT TODAY (SATURDAY). THEY REFUSED TO FASTEN THEIR SAFETY BELTS, SO THE PILOT COULD NOT TAKE OFF TO FLY BACK TO LONDON.

THE BAN-THE-BOMB DEMONSTRATORS FLEW INTO GERMANY YESTERDAY, IN A CHARTERED AEROPLANE, TO TAKE PART IN A GERMAN ANTI-BOMB MARCH THROUGH THE ROHR TO DORTMUND, WHERE A BRITISH NUCLEAR MISSILE REGIMENT IS STATIONED.

IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS SAID THE GROUP - AGED FROM 14 TO 73, AND INCLUDING AN EXPECTANT MOTHER - COULD NOT ENTER THE COUNTRY. THREE DAYS AGO THE WEST GERMAN PARLIAMENT BANNED ALL FOREIGN ANTI-BOMB MARCHERS FROM ENTERING THE COUNTRY AT EASTER.

THE BRITISH PROMPTLY SAT ON THE FLOOR, AND SOME SCUFFLES BROKE OUT BETWEEN POLICE AND GERMAN DEMONSTRATORS, WAITING AT THE AIRPORT TO GREET THEIR COLLEAGUES.

THEN THE BRITISH GROUP WERE DRAGGED BACK TO THE PLANE, AND THE SECOND SIT-DOWN BEGAN. THEY REFUSED TO FASTEN THEIR SAFETY BELTS.

MR. ANDREW FRANKLIN, THE BRITISH CONSUL-GENERAL, PLEADED WITH THEM FOR SIX HOURS TO GO BACK HOME. HE SAID THEY HAD MADE THEIR POINT. THE DEMONSTRATORS SAID THEY WERE PREPARED TO STAY IN DUSSELDORF JAILS TILL MONDAY IF 50 GERMANS WERE ALLOWED TO FLY IN THE PLANE TO LONDON TO TAKE PART IN THE ALDERMASTON MARCH - A FOUR-DAY MARCH FROM A BRITISH ATOMIC RESEARCH CENTRE IN LONDON. THE OFFER WAS TURNED DOWN.

LATER AN OFFICIAL SAID FIVE OF THE DEMONSTRATORS WANTED TO RETURN TO LONDON. THE OTHERS WERE PREPARED TO WAIT.
