HOPES ARE HIGH THAT 1,113 PRISONERS, CAPTURED IN THE ABORTIVE INVASION OF CUBA IN APRIL 1961, WILL BE RELEASED IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS -- AND POSSIBLY IN TIME TO SPEND CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR WITH RELATIVES IN THE UNITED STATES.

THE PRISONERS ARE TO BE RETURNED TO THE UNITED STATES IN EXCHANGE FOR A SHIPLOAD OF MEDICINE AND BABY FOOD. ORIGINALLY, THE CUBAN PRIME MINISTER, DR FIDEL CASTRO, HAD OFFERED TO RELEASE THE PRISONERS ON PAYMENT OF 62 MILLION DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP22 MILLION).

AN AMERICAN CARGO SHIP, THE "AFRICAN PILOT" SAILED FROM BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ON MONDAY ON THE FIRST LEG OF THE JOURNEY TO CUBA. IT WILL STOP AT PORT EVERGLADES, NEAR MIAMI, FLORIDA, TO TAKE ON SUPPLIES. THE "AFRICAN PILOT" IS UNDER CHARTER TO THE AMERICAN RED CROSS SOCIETY.

NEW YORK LAWYER, MR JAMES B. DONOVAN, HAS FLOWN TO HAVANA SEVERAL TIMES TO TRY TO COMPLETE NEGOTIATIONS FOR THE EXCHANGE OF THE PRISONERS FOR MEDICAL SUPPLIES. LATEST REPORTS SAY THAT ARRANGEMENTS ARE NOW ALMOST COMPLETE FOR THE FINAL HAND OVER.

AT OPA LOCKA AIRPORT IN NORTHERN MIAMI, RED CROSS PERSONNEL ARE SUPERVISING THE STOPING OF FOOD AND DRUGS THAT MAY GO TO CUBA.
