  • Description

IN GENEVA, APR 4, MORE THAN A HUNDRED WOMEN FROM TEN COUNTRIES PETITIONED THE 17-NATION DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE TO BAN NUCLEAR WEAPONS TESTS.

THE 103 HOUSEWIVES AND MOTHERS - THE MAJORITY OF THEM MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES "WOMEN STRIDE FOR PEACE" AND THE BRITISH "MOTHERS AGAINST WAR" MOVEMENTS, OTHERS REPRESENTING AUSTRIAN, CANADIAN, FRENCH, NORWEGIAN, RUSSIAN, SWEDISH, SWISS AND WEST GERMAN GROUPS -WALKED IN PROCESSION FROM THE PONT DE MONT BLANC TO THE PALAIS DES NATIONS.

MR DEAN OF THE UNITED STATES AND MR ZORIN OF THE SOVIET UNION, CO-CHAIRMEN OF THE DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE, TALKED TO THEM IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE MORNING'S PLENARY SESSION, WHICH AGAIN FAILED TO BREAK THE DEADLOCK ON THE NUCLEAR TEST BAN ISSUE.

MRS DAGMAR WILSON OF WASHINGTON, FOUNDER AND SPOKESMAN OF THE AMERICAN MOVEMENT. INTRODUCED "FATHER DEAN AND FATHER ZORIN" TO THE MOTHERS. THEY SAT IN SILENCE AS A NORWEGIAN MOTHER READ A PETITION STATING: "WE WOMEN, WHO ARE PART OF THE CREATIVE FORCE OF THE WORLD AND ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF DIFFERENT IDEOLOGIES AND SOCIAL SYSTEMS, ASSEMBLE HERE IN GENEVA TO EXPRESS THE HOPES AND FEARS OF ALL WOMEN IN THEIR DEEP CONCERN FOR THE SURVIVAL OF MANKIND". MRS WILSON ASKED THE UNITED STATES AND RUSSIA TO GIVE AND TAKE A BIT MORE IN THE NAME OF HUMANITY.

AFTER RECEIVING SEVERAL BUNDLES OF DOCUMENTS BOUND IN BLUE RIBBON, MR DEAN AND MR ZORIN ASSURED THE WOMEN DELEGATES OF THEIR UNDERSTANDING. MR ZORIN SAID: "I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL CONSIDER YOUR PETITION AND CARRY OUT OUR WORK IN THE LIGHT OF YOUR DESIRES."
