The 41st Hastings International Chess Congress opened on Britain's south coast today. The official challenger?
The 41st Hastings International Chess Congress opened on Britain's south coast today. The official challenger for the world championship is Boris Spassky of the U.S.S.R.
Svetozar Glicoric of Yugoslavia faced the favourite for the world title, Russia's Boris Spassky, while the moves were shown on a board mounted on the wall. Another Russian competitor was Evgeny Vasukov, who met William Hartston of Britain.
Spassky's main rivals in the world championship game are his fellow countryman Vasukov, Yugoslavia's Glicoric and Uhlmann, from East Germany.
An innovation at this year's congress is the substitution of a 36-strong Swiss system tournament for the American-style challenger's system used last year.
