    France's President Charles de Gaulle and Madame de Gaulle, on the second day of their four-day State visit to London, Apr 6 - were the guests of the Lord Mayor, Sir Edmund Stockdale, at a banquet held at London's Guildhall.

    On their arrival there were shouts of welcome from the 600 guests assembled to greet the President and his wife. Speaking in French, the Lord Mayor announced that it was the 39th wedding anniversary of the French visitors. Cheers greeted on the announcement. Sir Edmund went on to remind his audience that President de Gaulle was no stranger to London.

    As he rose to reply, the French leader was given an ovation which lasted for a full minute. General de Gaulle said:
    When the President and his wife left the hall they were given another long ovation.

    General de Gaulle then drove to Carlton Gardens to attend an assembly of his former Free French Association.
