    Background: POWER FROM THE SUN... AT TOHOKU UNIVERSITY, SOME 200 MILES NORTH OF TOKYO, JAPANESE SCIENTISTS HAVE STARTED TESTING A SOLAR FURNACE - THE BIGGEST IN THE FAR EAST. THE GIANT FURNACE BUILT WITH GLASS FROM BRITAIN, FUSES TUNGSTEN POWDER AT A TEMPERATURE OF 3,400 DEGREES CENTIGRADE, INCINERATING SOME OF THE TUNGSTEN AND MELTS ALUMINIUM AT A TEMPERATURE OF 2,800 DEGREES CENTIGRADE. FROM THESE TESTS SCIENTISTS BELIEVE THE TOHOKU SOLAR FURNACE MAY BE THE FIRST IN THE WORLD TO SUSTAIN TEMPERATURES WELL ABOVE 3,000 DEGREES CENTIGRADE.

    COSTING 102,000 DOLLARS, THE FURNACE TOOK THREE YEARS TO BUILD AND RANKS WITH THE WORLDS BIGGEST SOLAR FURNACES AT THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY IN AMERICA, THE TASHKENT INSTITUTE IN THE SOVIET UNION AND MONT LOUIS IN FRANCE.

    THE JAPANESE FURNACE IS OF THE REFLECTING TYPE, WITH A PYRAMID-SHAPED HELIOSTAT WHOSE BANKS OF REFLECTORS MOVE WITH THE SUN. THE HELIOSTAT WHOSE BANKS OF REFLECTORS MOVE WITH THE SUN. THE HELIOSTAT EMPLOYS 238 MIRRORS PLANES ARRANGED IN SEVEN BANKS. THEY REFLECT THE SUN ONTO GIANT PARABOLOIDAL MIRROR COMPOSED OF 181 HIGHLY-POLISHED MIRRORS WHICH CONCENTRATE THE SUN'S HEAT IN A FOCAL POINT ONLY 3 CENTIMETRES IN DIAMETER.

    MAIN PURPOSE OF THE FURNACE IS TO AID THE UNIVERSITY IN RESEARCH INTO HIGH TEMPERATURES IN PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY.
