  • Description

INDIAN MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT WERE TAKEN AWAY BY POLICE YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) AFTER SCUFFLES OUTSIDE THE SOVIET EMBASSY AS THEY TRIES TO HAND IN A PROTEST NOTE CONDEMNING THE SOVIET AND WARSAW PACT MILITARY INTERVENTION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA. THE NOTE DEMANDED THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE "AGGRESSIVE ARMED FORCES".

THE DEMONSTRATION INVOLVED 175 M.P.'s, MOSTLY FROM SOCIALIST AND RIGHT-WING OPPOSITION PARTIES BUT INCLUDING ONE OR TWO RULING CONGRESS MEMBERS. THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED SILENTLY TO THE EMBASSY, WHICH WAS CORDONED OFF BY POLICE.

MOST OF THE DEMONSTRATORS DISPERSED, BUT AN EMBASSY OFFICIALLY REFUSED TO ALLOW A GROUP OF 17 MEMBERS OF THE SAMYUKT SOCIALIST PARTY TO ENTER THE GATES. THEIR LEADERS REFUSED TO HAND THE NOTE THROUGH THE GATES AND A SCUFFLE ENSUED BETWEEN DEMONSTRATORS AND POLICE, AFTER WHICH SOME WERE ARRESTED.

THE NOTE WAS EVENTUALLY HANDED OVER BY A POLICEMAN.
