  • Description

Some one thousand French firemen marched through Paris in full uniform today (Thursday, March 18) demanding better pay and hours. They came from all over the country and carried banners identifying the districts they represented. Their march, which ended outside the Ministry of Economy and Finance, is the culmination of four months of work-to-rule which began on November 19, 1970, when nearly half of France's 6,500 firemen claimed that they had been "forgotten" in a government reform of certain categories of public servants. The demonstration was orderly and no clashes or arrests resulted from the protest.
