  • Description

On his way north from Formosa to Korea, President Eisenhower paid a 2-hour visit to Okinawa island, site of a big American base, where he got a mixed reception. From those wanting the return to Japan of the local Ryuku Islands - snake dancing and "US imperialists get out of Japan" placards: from friendly Okinawans - cheers and flag waving.

12,000 US troops - from America's big base of Okinawa in the Ryukus, lined President Eisenhower's procession route from the airport, but a quiet back route was chosen for the presidential exit en route to Korea.

Skirting Japan, pregnant with unhappy memories of the cancelled visit, the president flew into Seoul, S. Korea, and was given a great welcome by the crowds, this last official visit throwing a shaft of sunlight on an unfortunate Asian tour at the end of Eisenhower's presidential term.

From Korea, the President flew off to Hawaii, where S. Korea's deposed Syngman Rhoe is now staying.
