  • Description

Cassius Clay, now know as Muhhamad Ali, is training had in Frankfurt to defend his world heavyweight boxing championship against Karl Mildenberger of West Germany on September 10.

Clay told reporters that he's fitter now than when he defeated Brian London last month and Henry Cooper a month earlier, saying that his condition was better and his hitting power harder. But the champion added that he always guarded against becoming over confident, although he knew that no man could deprive him of his title.

Clay predicted a rough, tough fight against Mildenberger, who is European champion, and has admitted that he's worried at the prospect of meeting a southpaw for the first time in his professional life. He boxed only tow southpaws as an amateur, and lost both times. So now he's working for a knockout victory, putting in extra time at the heavy punch bag.

Mildenberger, and eighteen-year-old, is training in a camp at the spa of Bad Soden. He's the first German to try for the world title since Max Schmeling was felled in one round by Joe Louis in 1938.

Mildenberger's main sparring partner is Billy Daniels of the United States. His comment on the forthcoming championship bout was: "I was never a champion in training, but I will make it difficult like Clay never had in his fights against Henry Cooper and Brian London."
