  • Description

In India several thousand people working with the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh Hindu Voluntary Organisation took part in a rally in New Delhi on Monday. (5 March).

SYNOPSIS: The R.S.S. was founded in 1925 with the aim of unifying Hindu society. It put up strong resistance to former Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi's state of emergency -- and its religious origins are emphasised in this chant.

It is said to be the best organised force in the current Indian social and political arena, but has come under severe attack by several left-wing groups -- as well as Mrs Gandhi's Congress Party. They say R.S.S. is a right-wing movement -- but the organisation itself says it has no political ambitions.

The main speaker at the rally was R.S.S. leader Balasahed Deoras. He said the organisation was being attacked by people with vested interests for political reasons.

Mr. Deoras also said members of several non-Hindu communities were participating in R.S.S. activities. Among those who attended the rally were Indian Minister for Foreign Affairs Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Minister of Information Lal K. Advani.
