  • Description

In Egypt, President Anwar Sadat has been continuing with his normal official duties in the middle of the armed clashes with the neighbouring Libyan Arab Jamahiriyah. On Saturday (23 July) he visited Cairo University for an official function, the day after describing Jamahiriyah leader Colonel Muammar Gadaffi as 'a queer man and mental case'.

SYNOPSIS: President Sadat, who was visiting the University's engineering faculty on the 25th anniversary of the overthrow of the Egyptian monarchy, made his personal attack on Colonel Gadaffi in an eve-of-anniversary speech. He also blamed the Libyans for the fighting, which has involved tank and aircraft battles and indirectly accused Colonel Gadaffi of being a Soviet agent.

The Egyptian leader, who was loudly applauded as he entered the university, said during his eve-of-anniversary nation-wide speech that his armed forces were giving Colonel Gadaffi 'a lesson he would never forget'. He was speaking as Egyptian jet aircraft struck deeply into Libyan territory and bombed an airbase in the second successive day of armed clashes which began nine days earlier. The open rift between the two nations, however, dates back to the Arab-Israeli war of October 1973, in which Colonel Gadaffi accused Egypt of failing to inform him of plans to attack Israel, and later criticised President Sadat for signing a ceasefire with Israel.
