  • Description

KAPIT IS AN ATTRACTIVE TOWN ON THE RAJANG RIVER IN EASTERN SARAWAK WITH A POPULATION OF FIVE THOUSAND, MAINLY CHINESE, MALAYS AND IBANS (DAYAKS).

THE TOWN IS ABOUT 40 MILES FROM THE INDONESIAN BORDER. IT HAS EXCELLENT HOUSING AND SHOPPING FACILITIES, ELECTRICITY, CHURCHES, SCHOOL AND HOSPITAL.

THE BRITISH MILITARY POST IS MANNED BY THE FIRST SIXTH GURKHAS WHO RECENTLY ARRIVED FROM BRITAIN WHERE THEY SPENT ABOUT TWENTY MONTHS AT TIDWORTH IN HAMPSHIRE. THEIR QUARTERS HAVE FITTED SNUGLY INTO THE GENERAL SCENE AND ARE QUITE UNOBTRUSIVE.

IN ADDITION TO NORMAL PATROL WORK, THE GURKHAS HAVE CONSTANT TRAINING ON A NEARBY JUNGLE RANGE. THEY GO THROUGH AN AREA SET WITH LIFE-SIZE TARGETS- SOME HIDDEN IN A FIXED POSITION, OTHERS MOVING ON WIRES ACROSS AND UP THE RANGE AT VARYING HEIGHTS AND SPEEDS.

THE TARGET POSITIONS ARE CHANGED DAILY.
