Background: A team of 20 Chinese athletes put on a display of acrobatic gymnastics in Hong Kong on Monday (12 April), the first occasion a team from the mainland has done so. Among those appearing at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wanchai were four gymnasts who won medals in the World Cup competition held in Switzerland last year. They were Li Shaowen and Hu Fufeng who came second in the men's doubles, and Luo Lihong and Yu Jianjun, third in the mixed doubles. Although it was the first time the Chinese had taken part in the world championships, they won four gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals, second only to the Soviet Union's total number of medals. The ages of the team range from 14 to 25. Acrobatic gymnastics has developed rapidly in China, where 600 people competed in the latest national championships. The leader of the team, Miss Ren Guoyo, said the Chinese are working on ways of blending gymnastics with traditional dances and music.
