    BRITAIN'S WONDER JET, THE BAC-III-FILMED HERE DURING ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT-CRASHED ON A TEST FLIGHT OVER SOUTHERN ENGLAND TODAY (TUESDAY). THERE WERE NO SURVIVORS AMONG THE SEVEN MEN - TWO PILOTS AND FIVE OBSERVERS - ABOARD THE SHORT - RANGE AIRLINER, ONLY ONE OF ITS TYPE TO FLY SO FAR.

    THE PLANE CRASHED ON OPEN GROUND, BETWEEN SHAFTESBURRY AND WARMINSTER, WILTSHIRE, CAUGHT FIRE AND WAS COMPLETELY BURNT OUT. THE PROTOTYPE MADE ITS FIRST FLIGHT ON AUGUST 20.

    THE AIRCRAFT IS THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION'S PURE JET SUCCESSOR OF THE POPULAR TURBO-PROP "BUS-STOP" VISCOUNT. IT'S DESIGNED TO CARRY UP TO 74 PASSENGERS ON SHORT-NAUL FLIGHT OF 500 TO 1,000 MILES (800 TO 1,600 KMS).

    SIXTY OF THE PLANES HAVE BEEN ORDERED FROM SIX DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AT A COST OF GBP60 MILLION. THEY INCLUDE 31 FOR AIRLINES IN THE UNITED STATES.
