Background: IN A FAST AND EXCITING FIRST-DIVISION MATCH AT ARSENAL'S HIGHBURY, LONDON, GROUND ON SATURDAY (9 AUGUST), EVERTON JUST MANAGED TO BEAT ARSENAL BY ONE GOAL TO NIL, WHEN, IN THE CLOSING MINUTES OF THE MATCH, HURST SCORED FROM CLOSE IN AFTER A FREE KICK BY MORRISSEY HAD ESCAPED THE ARSENAL DEFENCE.

CHARLIE GEORGE, THE 18-YEAR-OLD LOCAL BOY MAKING HIS DEBUT FOR ARSENAL, JUSTIFIED HIS PRESENCE WITH SOME THOUGHTFUL MIDFIELD WORK. HE HAD ONLY TO TOUCH THE BALL TO SET THE CHEERS GOING.

IN THE FIRST HALF, BOTH TEAMS HAD SUCH A WELL-ORGANISED DEFENCE THAT THE GAME BECAME SOMETHING OF A GOALKEEPERS' HOLIDAY. BOTH SIDES ATTACKED WELL, BUT AT HALF-TIME NEITHER SIDE HAD SCORED.

EVERTON WERE QUICKLY ON TO THE OFFENSIVE IN THE SECOND HALF, BUT ANY OPENING WAS GENERALLY THE RESULT OF LUCKY REBOUNDS. JUST SUCH A CHANCE CAME TO MORRISSEY AFTER 25 MINUTES. ONLY TEN YARDS OUT, HE HIT THE BALL WELL AND IT WAS LUCKY FOR ARSENAL THAT THE BALL STRUCK RICE AND WENT BEHIND FOR A CORNER.

ARSENAL BEGAN TO GET A SOLID GRIP ON THE GAME IN THE LAST 15 MINUTES, BUT FAILED TO CREATE A CLEAR-CUT OPENING AS EVERTON PACKED THEIR DEFENCE.

HURST'S LOB FROM CLOSE IN WAS A SOFT GOAL TO ROB ARSENAL OF THE POINT.
