  • Description

It was almost like the old days in Thailand on Friday as three United States Navy ships sailed in for a goodwill visit.

Some 5,000 sailors from the US Seventh Fleet vessels started descending on Bangkok and the seaside resort of Pattaya for shore leave. Most of them are from the 34,000-ton aircraft carrier Constellation.

The 5-day visit by the Constellation and the frigates gave the US military its greatest prominence in Thailand for several years.

Only last year, because of the strong left-wing student demonstrators, the US completed its military withdrawal from Thailand of once powerful 50,000-strong force stationed at the seven air bases during the Indochina wars.

There was no protest over the US Naval visit - just a warm welcome not only by official but also by many beautiful bar girls at sea-shore.

Bar girls have flocked to Pattaya from Bangkok and provincial towns in the hope of good pickings among the Constellation's crew.

A massage parlour advertised a 20-percent discount for US servicemen, and tailors boasted that they could produce suits in 24 hours.

"Very nice, just like before," commented a bar-girl dancing with an American serviceman again after months of entertaining mostly West German and Japanese tourists.
