  • Description

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in Lisbon on Monday (6 October) night to support left-wing soldiers defying the government's attempts to restore military discipline.

In response to a Communist backed appeal, many marched to the barracks of one of the best known extreme left units - the Lisbon Light Artillery Regiment.

A speaker criticised the government's action in ordering the occupation of left-wing radio stations last week. He said this was a provocation opening the doors to the right. The crowd roared "Revolutionary discipline - yes. Reactionary discipline - no".

The demonstrators were joined by lorry loads of soldiers from other units who arrived shouting "SUV, SUV" - the initials of the dissident soldiers' movement "Soldiers United Will Win".

In the northern Portuguese city of Oporto troops loyal to the government fired rubber bullets and tear gas to repulse crowds of left-wing demonstrators after taking over a barracks from dissident soldiers.

Portugal's President Francisco Da Costa Gomes has warned the military that reactionary elements may be using their current left-wing militancy to destroy their operational capacity and attack the revolution.
