  • Description

MEXICO CITY IS PREPARING FOR THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL SPORTS WEEK -- THE LAST BIG DRESS REHEARSAL FOR THE 19TH OLYMPIC GAMES IN 1968.

THE SPORTS WEEK, WITH 2,508 ATHLETES COMPETING FROM 47 COUNTRIES BEGINS ON SUNDAY (OCTOBER 15) WITH COMPETITION IN TRACK AND FIELD EVENTS AT THE MAIN OLYMPIC STADIUM.

ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS FOR THIS INTERNATIONAL EVENT IS THE NEED BY COMPETITORS IN THE OLYMPICS TO KNOW ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF COMPETITION AT HIGH ALTITUDE. THE OLYMPICS WILL BE HELD 7,400 FEET (2450 METRES) ABOVE SEA LEVEL. THIS COULD PUT COMPETITORS FROM LOW-LYING NATIONS AT A DISADVANTAGE - AND MANY COUNTRIES WANT TO ESTABLISH IN WHAT WAY.

THE GAMES ARE A BIG EVENT FRO MEXICO. THEY ARE BEING MARKED BY A SERIES OF STAMPS, THE FIRST COVERS OF WHICH WENT ON ALE ON OCTOBER 12.

AS THE BIG DAY APPROACHED WORKMEN SCRAMBLED AT THE STADIUM TO GET THE LAST FEW JOBS DOWN IN READINESS FOR THE ATHLETES. ONE OF THEIR PROBLEMS WAS GETTING THE LAST OF THE CAST-CEMENT SEATS INTO PLACE IN PREPARATION FOR THE TRACK AND FIELD EVENTS WHICH OPEN THE SPORTS ON OCTOBER 15. IN OTHER PARTS OF THE CITY WORK GOES ON 24 HOURS A DAY IN PREPARATION FOR THE GAMES.

TALL COLUMNS OF STEEL BARS, CEMENT INCHING UP AROUND THEM, WILL BECOME A MAMMOTH OLYMPIC SWIMMING POOL, SO A SIGN SAYS. IN ANOTHER SECTION A HUGE DOME, CLOSELY RESEMBLING THE UNITED STATES PAVILION AT EXPO '67 IN MONTREAL, CANADA,IS RISING TO HOUSE MOST OF THE INDOOR EVENTS. IT IS CALLED "THE PALACE OF SPORTS" AND WAS DESIGNED BY THE INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS MEXICAN ARCHITECT PEDRO RAMIREZ VAZQUEZ WHO IS PRESIDENT OF THE OLYMPIC ORGANISING COMMITTEE.

ON THE SITE OF THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE BULLDOZERS, AND THE OTHER UP-TO-DATE MACHINERY OF THE 20TH CENTURY HAVE UNEARTHED PYRAMIDS BUILT THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO BY THE AZTECS. FOR MANY OF THE PEOPLE OF MEXICO THE OLYMPIC GAMES PROMISE A RETURN TO THE SORT OF GLORY THAT THE AZTECS CREATED.
