    THE BODIES OF TWO INDONESIAN MARINES -- EXECUTED IN SINGAPORE FOR SABOTAGE -- WERE RETURNED TO DJAKARTA YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TO RECEIVE A HEROES' RECEPTION. MORE THAN 10-THOUSAND PEOPLE PACKED THE AIRPORT AS THE BODIES WERE FLOWN IN FROM SINGAPORE ABOARD AN INDONESIAN AIRFORCE PLANE.

    THE TWO INDONESIANS, AGED 23 AND 25, WERE SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR PLANTING A BOMB WHICH KILLED THREE PEOPLE IN 1965 DURING INDONESIA'S CONFRONTATION WITH MALAYSIA. THE MEN CLAIMED THAT THEY WERE INDONESIAN MARINES BUT THEY WERE CONVICTED AS SABOTEURS.

    THE COFFINS WERE TAKEN FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND BORNE ACROSS THE AIRPORT TARMAC IN A SOLEMN CEREMONY. THE EXECUTED MEN WERE DECLARED NATIONAL HEROES AND WERE BURIED THE FOLLOWING DAY WITH FULL MILITARY HONOURS.

    THE PAIR, OSMAN BIN JAJI MOHAMMED ALI AND HARUN BIN SAID, WERE SENT TO SINGAPORE ON A MISSION AT THE HEIGHT OF THE CONFRONTATION WITH MALAYSIA, WHICH THEN INCLUDED SINGAPORE. THEY WERE FOUND GUILTY OF SABOTAGE AND SENTENCED TO DEATH BUT THEY APPEALED TO THE PRIVY COUNCIL. THEIR APPEAL WAS REJECTED AND THE TWO MEN WERE EXECUTED EARLY THIS WEEK.
