  • Description

THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND CATHOLICS CARRIED BANNERS THROUGH SAIGON LAST SUNDAY CALLING ON THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT TO QUELL PLOTS AIMED AT RELIGIOUS DIVISION.

THE DEMONSTRATORS ALSO DEMANDED A "JUST AND MORE EFFECTIVE NATIONAL POLICY" AGAINST COMMUNISM. THEY ACCUSED THE GOVERNMENT OF LACKING A POLITICAL STRATEGY, OF BEING UNDER PRESSURE FROM "EXTREMIST" GROUPS AND OF COUNTENANCING DEMAGOGUERY INSTEAD OF DEMOCRACY.

SLOGANS CARRIED BY THE DEMONSTRATORS INCLUDED ONE EXPRESSING GRATITUDE TO THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE. ANOTHER URGED THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR, MR. HENRY CABOT LODGE, TO BE "RESOLUTE AND CLEAR" IN HIS STAND AGAINST COMMUNISM.

THE CATHOLIC SPECIFICALLY ASKED THE GOVERNMENT TO SET UP A COMMITTEE TO QUELL PLOTS AIMED AT RELIGIOUS DIVISION, ESPECIALLY IN CENTRAL VIETNAM, AND TO PREVENT HARM TO EITHER CATHOLICS "UNJUSTLY IMPRISONED" AND WARNED THAT CATHOLICS WOULD WHOLE-HEATEDLY RESIST IF THE GOVERNMENT BETRAYED ITS PLEDGE TO FIGHT COMMUNISM.
