The first two singles matches in the Davis Cup tennis semi-final between Italy and Australia were played in Rome on Friday (24 September).

SYNOPSIS: The opening match was between John Newcombe of Australia and Corrado Barazzutti of Italy.Newcombe, who has won the Wimbledon men's singles championship three times, started well and soon took a four games to one lead over his Italian opponent. Newcombe's greater experience had been expected to give him victory over Barazzutti.

However, Barazzutti, helped along by a cheering home crowd, went on to take the first set by seven games to five after a fairly close fight. This win appeared to give the Italian more confidence.

Meanwhile Newcombe was playing with less of the confidence that had won him so many major matches and he lost the second set by six games to one. Barazzutti ten took the third set,six games to four, to give him a straight sets win and Italy a one-nil lead in the semi-final. The winner of the series will play Chile in the Davis Cup final.

In the second singles match the italian champion, Adriano Panatta, was playing John Alexander. This was another match where the result was contrary to expectations. Panatta's greater clay court experience was expected to give him a win over Alexander.

However, Alexander surprised Panatta with his speed about the court and eventually won the match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. Alexander's unexpected win squared the series for Australia and meant that the result depended on the doubles match and the return singles matches.
