  • Description

One of the more obvious phenomena of the seventies has been the influence of young people on the styles adopted by their parents. Travelling further and further afield, absorbing the culture of the countries they visited, a prosperous and restless generation of young Europeans at first outraged and then later subtly changed the attitudes of their elders -- and as always reflecting the mood of the times, in no sphere has this been more evident than in women's fashions.

SYNOPSIS: A few years ago ladies wealthy enough to indulge their taste for exquisitely designed high fashion clothes wouldn't have been seen dead in anything other than European styling. But as the Tita Rossi winter collection, seen here during her show in Rome last week, demonstrates those days have passed. She openly admits that these outfits were inspired by the styles of the Peruvian Indians -- only for Rossi customers the coats are mink and the fabrics soft and luxurious.

For evening Tita Rossi showed lots of layered dresses in stripes, plaids and prints. Colours were mainly purple and blue and many of the ensembles were worn with shawls and turbans.

These exotic numbers take their inspiration from 18th century mainland Spanish fashions blended with the native styles of Latin America -- a combination both ultra-feminine and dramatic. The dresses are ruffled and tiered and teamed with delicate black lace shawls.

Moving from West to East now, Miss Rossi says that these outfits were inspired by Lawrence of Arabia. Long flowing open waistcoats over tunics and baggy trousers in silk lame.

More eastern influence here in these filmy, semi-transparent evening dresses which appear to be based on the styles of the Coochi tribes people of Afghanistan. Superbly executed with the best of modern European fabrics, they do ample justice to the ethnic look which has penetrated all levels of fashion consciousness. Quite rightly Tita Rossi's winter collection received an ovation from the highly sophisticated Rome audience. The designer herself took a bow with the models.
