  • Description

President Hafez al-Assad of Syria and President Anwar Sadat of Egypt have begun talks on a long term strategy for resolving the Middle East conflict.

SYNOPSIS: President Assad arrived in Egypt on Saturday for talks with the Egyptian leader. The two countries appear to differ over Palestinian representation at a Geneva peace conference. President Assad has said the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) could be included in a single Arab delegation comprising the PLO, Egypt, Syria and Jordan. But Egypt favours four separate delegations for the talks.

Egypt has for some months been waging a determined diplomatic battle to have the Geneva conference reconvened, and President Sadat has already stated that 1977 must be the "year of peace". But Mr. Farouk Kaddoumi, head of the PLO's political department, has cast doubts on a peaceful solution and said a fifth Arab-Israeli war was a stronger possibility.
