Background: Fencing--and Hungary has won the Challenge Martini for the sixth time in twenty-one years. Lazlo Petho clinched the tournament by beating Patric Pethot of France ten-seven in the Seymour Hall, London on Sunday ( 2 March).

SYNOPSIS: In the semi-finals, Picot faced V. Fischer of West Germany, who had gained a narrow quarter-finals win over Carrard or Switzerland. This was also a close contest. But Picot got the vital hit, and won ten-nine.

In the other semi-final, Petho took on C. Bernadotte of Sweden, who was trying to salvage some prestige for his country. Bernadotte had run to an eight-six lead, but Petho held firm. This tournament is the one world classic held annually in London. Ranking only below the Olympic Games and world championships, it attracted more than one hundred and thirty fencers from eighteen countries. Petho won four points in a row to move into the final.

The judges had seen the defending champion and other highly-fancied competitors eliminated, until Petho and Picot were left to contest the final. And Petho, leading here nine to seven, was within one touch of winning the title. He scored the hit, to win ten-seven and take the trophy. A good victory for a man who had started as an outsider.
