  • Description

PABLO CASALS, WORLD FAMOUS CELLIST, MADE ONE OF HIS EXTREMELY RARE APPEARANCES IN PUBLIC NOV. 13, WHEN HE PLAYED AT THE WHITE HOUSE FOLLOWING A STATE DINNER GIVEN BY PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND MRS. KENNEDY FOR GOVERNOR LUIS MUNOZ MARIN OF PUERTO RICO.

WHILE PRESIDENT AND MRS. KENNEDY GREETED THEIR GUESTS AND DINED AMID ALL THE GLITTER AND FORMALITY OF A STATE OCCASION, 84-YEAR-OLD PABLO CASALS RESTED AND PREPARED FOR HIS PERFORMANCE. HE HAD NOT PLAYED OFFICIALLY IN THE UNITED STATES SINCE 1928, HAVING SAID MANY TIMES THAT HE WOULD NOT GIVE CONCERTS IN A COUNTRY THAT RECOGNISED THE REGIME OF GENERALISSIMO FRANCO IN SPAIN. CASALS, A NATIVE OF SPAIN, HAS BEEN LIVING IN EXILE SINCE THE CIVIL WAR THERE. HE IS REPORTED TO HAVE BROKEN HIS SELF-IMPOSED SILENCE ON THIS OCCASION OUT OF RESPECT AND ADMIRATION FOR THE POLICIES OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S ADMINISTRATION.

ON THIS, HIS FIRST WHITE HOUSE APPEARANCE SINCE 1904, CASALS, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ALEXANDER SCHNEIDER, VIOLIN, AND MIECZYSLAW HORSZOWSKI, PIANO,PLAYED A SELECTION OF WORKS FROM MENDELSSOHN, SCHUMANN AND COUPERIN
