  • Description

The three East African Presidents, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and Milton Obote of Uganda, met in Entebbe, Uganda, on Wednesday (7 October) as the East African Authority. This is the executive body of the East African Community formed by the three countries.

A communique issued after the meetings, at which Dr. Nyerere presided, said that the three Presidents had decided to set up a multi-national telecommunications and Postal Training School near Nairobi, the Kenya capital. It will cater for students from Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland, as well as from East Africa.

The Authority also approved an application by a Yugoslav consortium for membership of the East African Development Bank.

Later the three leaders were joined by President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia at the official inauguration of Makerere University of Kampala. Formerly, Kampala, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam each had its own College which together formed the University of East Africa. Now each country is to have its own independent university.
