    Archbishop Makarios, now visiting Greece for talks with the Greek Government on the future of Cyprus, took time off to pay tribute to Greek students who died fighting against the former Greek military Junta in November last year.

    The Archbishop attended a religious service on Monday (2 December) and laid a wreath on the spot where many young men lost their lives trying to liberate greece from the military regime.

    Archbishop Makarios was wildly cheered by students and staff of the Polytechnic, where the killing took place. It was outside the school that soldiers smashed the school's gate and killed the students.

    Meanwhile, Greek and Greek-Cypriot leaders have agreed on a common policy for the political settlement of the Cyprus issue, and have decided to open negotiations with the Turkish Cypriot community on the decided to open negotiations with the Turkish Cypriot community on the island.

    The agreement came at the end of a two-day talks between Greek Premier Constantine Karamanlis and Archbishop Makarios.
