JOHN RICH: "The sun was shining brightly as the Japanese plane landed at Peking airport. The Japanese nationwide were glued to their television sets watching these pictures beamed from Peking by satellite ground stations set up during the past two weeks by Japanese technicians. Chinese Premier Chou En-lai was on hand to great the Japanese Prime Minister. Mr. Tanaka had put out the word that he intended to apologies for Japan's past aggression against China. The arrival was almost a carbon copy of President Nixon's visit last February....correct, but subdued. After shaking hands, the Japanese and Chinese leaders stood while their national anthems were played. Premier Tanaka reviewed a tri-service honour guard. The Japanese wore western suits, the Chinese their national Mao jackets. Mr. Tanaka shook hands with Chinese party officials...then with a group of Japanese trade ???missaries living with their families in Peking. The Japanese were led to the familiar curtained, black limousines for the drive to Peking, and six days of sight-seeing, banquets, and talks with Chinese leaders. A joint communique scheduled to be released later in the week is expected to announce the establishment of formal diplomatic relation between Japan and The People's Republic of China, which is the main goal of President Tanaka's trip."
