  • Description

Former Argentine President Juan Peron hinted on Saturday (25 November) that under certain circumstances he might give up his attempt to regain the Presidency. Asked at a press conference in Buenos Aires if he would renounce his candidacy in elections next March, he replied: "I will renounce everything if that will mean serving my people and country better."
Mr. Peron told foreign corespondents at his first full-scale press conference, since he returned home more than a week ago after 17 years exile, that he had no ambition except to serve Argentina in any way he could be useful.

The Justicialist Party has declared Mr. Peron a candidate for President in next year's general elections. But the government last July introduced an electoral rule laying down that all potential candidate must be resident in Argentina by last August 25--a deadline which Mr. Peron failed to meet.

On another subject, Mr. Peron indirectly expressed his support for the Argentine guerrilla movement by saying that guerrilla activity "is a natural escape mechanism for an oppressed people."
But it was the Presidential election with which Mr. Peron was most concerned. He called on the government to ensure a fair election without any conditions or restrictions. And he insisted that the question of his own candidacy was for the Justicialist Party, not himself, to decide.

At one point Mr. Peron commented on the position of the Justicialist Movement. An English translation of his Spanish remarks on film appears below.
