  • Description

SIX HUNDRED RHODESIAN CHIEFS AND HEADMAN MET BRITAIN'S COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY ARTHUR BOTTOMLEY AND LORD CHANCELLOR, LORD GARDINER, AT AN INDADA AT DONOSHAWA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).THEY ALL DEMANDED INDEPENDENCE UNDER THE PRESENT-CONSTITUTED RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT.AFTER DISCUSSIONS, MR BOTTOMLEY TOLD THEM THAT THEY HAD POINTS WHICH WE COULD NOT ACCEPT.

MR BOTTOMLEY TOLD THE CHIEFS THAT BRITAIN WANTED RHODESIA TO BE INDEPENDENT - BUT ON CONDITIONS WHICH WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE TO ALL.HE LATER TOLD NEWSMEN THAT HIS FIRST ROUND OF TALKS WITH THE RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES HAD BEEN "HARD GOING."
THE VISIT OF THE TWO BRITISH MINISTERS TO THE CHIEFS AT DONOSHAWA NEAR SALISBURY WAS GENERALLY REGARDED AS ONE OF THE MOST VITAL MEETINGS OF THEIR VISIT.AT A SIMILAR INDADA LAST OCTOBER THESE AFRICAN LEADERS STRONGLY SUPPORTED THE IMMEDIATE INDEPENDENCE POLICY OF PRIME MINISTER IAN SMITH.

THE CHIEFS SPOKE OF THE FEAR OF INTIMIDATION WHICH NOW PREVAILS.THEY LAID THE BLAME FOR THE PRESENT SITUATION AT THE FEET OF THE AFRICAN NATURALISTS.NROMO AND SITHOLE WERE DESCRIBED BY THE CHIEFS "AS CHILDREN".

AS THE FRACTIONAL RULERS IN RHODESIA, THE CHIEFS EXPRESSED THEIR DISMAY AND REGRET OVER THE NEGATIVE ATTITUDE OF SUCCESSIVE BRITISH GOVERNMENT TOWARDS THEIR ADVICE.
