    Syria's President, Hafez al-Assad, said in a broadcast in Syria on Tuesday (20 July) that he would not be swayed from his policy of intervention in Lebanon. He added that he had rejected an ultimatum from Israel on the subject. Earlier in the day, the President had addressed an audience at Damascus University.

    SYNOPSIS: In his speech at the university, President al-Assad reviewed the background to the crisis in Lebanon and explained Syria's reasons for intervening there. He said only the interest of the Lebanese people would define the scale of Syrian intervention. In his broadcast later, the President recalled that leaders of the Palestine Liberation Organisation had called for him to withdraw his troops, but said the PLO were in no position to make such a demand.

    President Assad said the United States Ambassador to Syria, Richard Murphy, had paid a visit to the Presidential Palace in April. He said the Ambassador had given him a not saying the U.S. had been advised that Israel might intervene in Lebanon if Syria's operations there were extended. The President said he totally rejected ??? he considered an Israeli ultimatum.
