  • Description

INTRODUCTION The airport in Niamy, capital of Niger, has been blocked by the debris of a United States cargo aircraft which crashed during a sandstorm, killing two of the four men aboard. The dead men were the captain and the flight engineer. The other two, also members of the crew, were injured. Hospital reports said their condition gave no cause for concern.

SYNOPSIS: The crash came in a sandstorm which swept across wide areas of central Africa, cutting off air communications to several countries. The aircraft was a Dakota DC-8, owned by a United States Company, Overseas National Airways. Coming to land, it crashed 800 yards (metres) short of the runway and careered along the ground in flames, completely blocking the small airport. The aircraft's flight recorder was recovered intact, but the precise cause of the crash was not immediately known. The injured co-pilot said there was nothing in the landing approach which indicated trouble. "All manoeuvres had been carried out properly and all was going well when I felt a shock and saw flames through the window" he said. The aircraft was on a flight from Paris, France, to Abidjan in the Ivory Coast -- stopping off in Niamy to unload cargo.
