  • Description

In Melbourne, Australia, Ilie Nastatse of Rumania and Guillermo Vilas of Argentina battled their way into the finals of the Commercial Union Masters Grand Prix Tennis Tournament on Saturday (14 December).

The two players met on Sunday (15 December) for the Masters title. Vilas won.

On Saturday, Nastase beat Australia's John Newcombe (known as one of the greatest post-war grass-court players) six-three; seven-six; six-two, in two hours of strict, disciplined play.

Nastase, triple winner of the Masters, was boosted by sheer determination and brilliant serving to gain the lead over Newcombe. But that was not easy. Newcombe put up a brief challenge when he raced to a four-zero lead in the second set.

    In another semi-final, Vilas overcame Mexico's Raul Ramirez four-six; six-three; six-two; seven-five.

Ramirez looked to be on his way to the final when he took the first set from Vilas in 25 minutes. But the Argentine began hammering home his powerful service and brilliant backhand to defeat the persistent Ramirez.

Both matches were played in extremely hot weather. Nearly 50 spectators were treated for heat exhaustion. Newsmen at the game said Vilas complained of fuzzy vision during the last game.
